OSPREY (Pandion haliaetus) length 22 inches wingspan 53 inches
Ospreys are fairly uncommon here. An osprey is a fairly large raptor with a length of 22-25 inches, and a wingspan of 4.5-6 feet, and a weight of about 4 pounds. The Osprey feeds almost exclusively on live fish, often catching its meals by hovering over the water at an altitude of 50 to 200 feet, then diveing feet first into the water to catch its prey. They have been known to dive up to 1 meter below the water surface. Each Osprey's foot has a reversible front toe, as well as barbs at the bottom of the feet, called "spicules" which help it hold onto slippery fish. Normally an Osprey will carry the fish head first in its talons for areodynamic flight. Some Ospreys have been known to drown, because the fish they grabbed were too big and they could not let go because of the grip they put on it. Other interesting facts: Ospreys generally pair for life A female Osprey will choose her mating partner based on the quality and location of the male's nest Osprey nests have been known to contain hula hoops, rag dolls, and toy boats. Osprey parents will hold back food in order to encourage fledglings to leave the nest. Osprey fledglings will sometimes move to nearby nests where they are fed by other parents.
This is Lucy. She was brought into the center by DENR near death. She was not moving and all her muscles were locked up as if paralyzed. It was determined she had a lactic acid build-up and immediate treatment was started. This is one bird I never thought would have lived, but with time and lots of work she made it. I had to exercise her slowly and daily for months, but got her to the point where she could fly again. She is a lifelong resident and spends her days happily swimming in the fishpond like a duck. I think she was more than likely blown off course by a storm, as the area she was found in, is not known for Ospreys. Another center is turning over another osprey soon that they are having problems with, so Lucy will soon have company.
